This series explores the role of music as a storytelling medium within, around, and inspired by the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien. Through lively discussion-based modules, we examine how composers, performers, and adaptations have interpreted Tolkien’s legendarium musically—from the Ainulindalë to Howard Shore’s film scores and beyond. No prior musical training is required; instead, we focus on the relationship between music, narrative, poetry, and worldbuilding. Participants will engage with recorded examples, lyrics, and thematic analysis while reflecting on how sound and song deepen our understanding of Middle-earth. A working familiarity with Tolkien’s texts is helpful but not required.
